CASE: More milk on the Chinese table from Hohhot, China

Installation on tight schedule, while full production continued
In the cattle land province of Inner Mongolia, a major part of the Chinese fresh milk is produced on large dairy farms. Some 30 % of Chinese cattle herds are found on the vast grass areas. The traditional agricultural industry was family run farms, producing for family needs. Small dairies produced milk for local needs. To meet the demands from the market, modern milk production was needed, with efficiency, higher productivity and consistent high quality. Modern traceability to ensure food safety was also a necessity.
The MengNiu Dairy Company decided to build complete dairy lines in a green field plant for a daily production of up to 1 800 000 litres milk per day in Hohhot, the capital of the province Inner Mongolia. The building and some of the processing equipment was new, while some machinery had to be moved from older plants in the region to this new facility.
Tetra Pak offered a step-by-step modernisation line solution, based on proven equipment and the Tetra PlantMaster, an innovative and modular plant automation solution based on open industry standards and production know-how. A challenge in the project was that the civil works were not finished when the installation started, but with rigorous project planning Tetra Pak managed to deliver on time.
As a result of the fast and high quality delivery together with the good cooperation with the MengNiu staff, Tetra Pak China received another new order - the new joint venture project of MengNiu and Arla Foods in 2007. The MengNiu Dairy Company plans to use the new Hohhot dairy as a reference plant, to show their high technical standard to their final consumers. Hopefully this will increase milk product consumption and thus also be a significant benefit for MengNiu’s future activities.
