School milk and dairy development in Bangladesh

In 2002 the Bangladesh school Nutrition programmes started covering initially 200,000 children in an area chosen for having the lowest literacy & highest malnutrition in the country. The programmes was funded by donation of commodities from the US Department of Agriculture,  run by Land O'Lakes together with local NGOs, supported by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and NGO Bureau and Tetra Pak.

Result of the programme: school attendance grow to over 90%, school enrollment grow by 34%, contributed to prevention of common micronutrient problems in children (night blindness, beriberi, anemia, goiter) and resulted in that 3 new dairy processor invested and started to produced UHT milk. Grew a new 14 million liter industry (before the programme started there was no dairy that could process and package UHT milk).
Created 500 direct jobs plus created benefits for local milk farmers with milk as cash crops. Milk collection increased by 20,000 liters per day.

(Model: Financed by foreign development aid and led by NGO)
