Package
We make sure food comes in a Ready-to-Drink (RTD) format in our feeding programmes. Our long experience has shown us the benefits of RTD packaged foods in satisfying both nutritional, food safety and programme management concerns.
Nutritional concerns
It is essential that the supplied funds are converted into a nutritious product that reaches every child in the programme. An RTD packaged format guarantees that each child receives the volume, type and quality of food that has been agreed. The use of RTD packaged products also enables programmes to be evaluated to see whether the health or learning ability of the children improves.
Food safety concerns
UHT treated food packed in aseptic packages is among the safest ways of distributing school feeding. RTD packaged products eliminate concerns about storage, hygiene and water quality.
Where food quality is an issue, the use of a RTD packaged format ensures traceability. This enables Programme Management to find the source of any problem and avoid future problems.
RDT ensures uniformity in the programme, making it easier to provide feeding guidelines such as proper handling of allergic reactions, and performing supervised feeding. It also puts a minimal effort on teachers and other school staff.
Programme management concerns
Distribution in RTD format enables programme management to implement solid check and balance systems to fight corruption and mismanagement.
Our carton packages often carry special school feeding designs that set them apart from commercial products, sometimes even carrying texts such as “NOT FOR SALE”. This reduces the risk that school feeding products are sold on the open market.
Tetra Pak packages
The Tetra Brik package is the most popular package for school feeding programmes today. The 200ml portion package is the most popular choice, and 125ml and 250ml packages are often used.
The Tetra Wedge Aseptic package (Guyana), Tetra Classic Aseptic package (Haiti, Hungary, Kenya, Iran and Romania) and Tetra Fino Aseptic package (Sudan) are used in different countries.
Package design
Our packages can be designed to carry messages promoting health and education. Children can also design their own packages as well as create their own school feeding mascot.
