School milk in Palestine

To combat child malnutrition, the NGO ANERA (The American Near East Refugee Aid) has successfully implemented the “Milk for Preschoolers Project” in Gaza since 2003. The program at present covers around 20 000 children who every day receives 200 ml of fortified milk and a fortified wafer in school. The ambition is to extend the program to cover 30 000 children in 2008 and eventually to cover all preschoolers in Gaza (85 000 children). Assessments show that the program has been very successful in improving the nutritional status of preschool children.

Tetra Pak has supported the programme i various ways including assistance in creating the packaging design. Four cartoon figures were created as mascots for the programme. Tetra Pak also provided advice and contacts regarding the fortification of the milk so that the nutritional deficiencies of the children in Gaza could be addressed.
