When we talk about the environmental profile of a package – or how sustainable it is – there are a number of different aspects we have to take into consideration. For nearly 20 years, we at Tetra Pak have been using the lifecycle approach – thinking in terms of the life of a package, from cradle to cradle – to evaluate the environmental impact of our packages.
When you think about packaging you have to consider the savings and environmental impacts in the whole process of delivering food. At Tetra Pak, we commit to make food safe and available, everywhere, as stated in our mission. That’s the principle of packaging. If you incorporate sustainability, you have to consider the savings and impacts throughout the entire lifecycle: raw material from renewable resources, energy consumption for converting the raw materials, processing and filling machines, transportation concerns, including trucks, product to package ratios, and refrigeration, storage at the retail level, convenience and quality for the end consumer, and recycling.
