About Tetra Pak
Tetra Pak is the world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company. Working closely with our customers and suppliers, we provide safe, innovative and environmentally sound products that each day meet the needs of hundreds of millions of people around the world.
Founded in 1951 by Dr. Ruben Rausing, Tetra Pak’s unique innovations have changed the way food is packaged and distributed around the world. We supply hundreds of different types of carton packaging that suits the needs of our customers. We also develop our own state-of-the-art processing solutions and design and service complete plants.
The long-life package is made of several layers: paper, aluminium and plastic. Together they prevent light, air and micro-organisms from reaching the food in order to prevent deterioration.Protection against light is important since light destroys the vitamins in foods such as milk and juice. The oxygen in the air produces a reaction in the food called oxidation, which may cause change in taste and colour. Air also carries microorganisms. We recognise that our activities, like all other activities on our planet, have an impact on the environment. We believe that we have the responsibility to minimize and manage these impacts. We believe in good corporate citizenship. Tetra Pak protects what’s good. “We believe in responsible industry leadership, creating profitable growth in harmony with environmental sustainability and good corporate citizenship.”
One of the key sustainability aspects of Tetra Pak packages is that they are based primarily on paper. Packages based on paper will live on, as they are made of wood, a renewable resource which fulfils environmental requirements for sustainable development in the long run. Renewable resources are good environmental choices as the raw material sources are infinite or can be renewed very quickly. While Tetra Pak in no way supports the cutting of forests, we firmly believe that by sourcing paper from forests that are managed in a professional and sustainable manner, together with recycling, the supply of wood fibre for the future will increase. Beverage cartons are highly suited to recycling as they consist mainly of paper fibres. Preparing an environmentally sustainable destination for postconsumer beverage cartons is one of Tetra Pak’s major commitments. These efforts are translated into developing technologies for recycling used beverage cartons; as well as providing technical support to street collectors and companies that use recycled materials and into environmental education programs carried out at schools and in communities.
Recycling treats the waste as raw materials to manufacture new products; this has many
benefits for the population:
• it reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills
• it reduces the extraction of raw materials
• it reduces energy consumption
• it reduces pollution
• it helps keep the cities clean
• it creates job opportunities
Recycling of post-consumer Tetra Pak packages is increasingly expected by societies around the world. Recycling implies that the material in the package is recovered and used again in new products. Recycling limits the quantity of packages disposed of in landfills and saves resources. The most common method of recycling Tetra Pak packages is by re-pulping in paper mills. This process separates the paper fibres from the plastic and aluminium, with fibres being used to produce new paper products. The plastic and aluminium fractions can be used either as a fuel by utilising their energy content, or they can be recycled into new products.
Together with our customers we make food safe and available, everywhere. Since the start in 1951 we have taken pride in providing the best possible processing and packaging solutions for food.
