Protecting people includes our communities. In line with our wider materiality approach, we focus on where we can make the greatest difference at a local level. This means channelling our human and financial resources to support child nutrition, sustainable livelihoods, youth employability and consumer engagement in sustainability.
We offer our partners practical support in implementing and evaluating school feeding programmes, while also advising on food safety, quality and the importance of fortified and nutritious beverages for children. We even advise on carton reuse and recycling within schools.
Our established Dairy Hub model is helping create sustainable value chains by building the capacity of smallholder farmers. We are also working with the World Wide Fund for Nature to establish local forest owners’ associations and strengthen the competences of smallholders to create sustainable, profitable businesses. In 2016, we supported a new project, the Fair Wood Program, which supports smallholder and community forest management.
Our Future Talent programme opens up opportunities for the next generation to build employability skills. It combines on-the-job training with development in a range of competencies and all participants are offered a job with us at the end. We see this approach as critical to our future commercial success.
By giving consumers the information to make discerning purchasing choices and recycling their cartons, we have the potential to bring resource efficiencies at a vast scale. To do this, we need to work closely with our customers and consumer organisations.
We contribute to specific appeals for support. For example, in 2016, in collaboration with customers, we shipped UHT milk to communities affected by hurricane Harvey in the U.S.A. We also helped our recycling partner in Kenya to set up the first Information and Communications Technology Centre in Kibera, Nairobi’s largest slum neighbourhood.
