Minimising food loss and waste is at the heart of everything we do. Today, food loss and waste still account for approximately 8% of total global GHG emissions1 and one third of the food that is produced is lost or wasted every year.2
Aseptic technology keeps food safe and flavourful — without refrigeration or preservatives. It allows food to retain more colour, texture, taste and nutrition and ensures that both food and packaging materials are free of harmful bacteria when food is packaged.
Advancing package design for efficient food production, transportation and storage
When transporting and storing food, waste can occur as a result of breakdowns in the cold chain and poor product handling. Tetra Pak invented the world’s first aseptic process and packaging, which enables food and beverages to be stored without refrigeration. Not only does aseptic packaging extend shelf life, but it also enables products to be transported and stored without refrigeration - ensuring that food products are less likely to be wasted and with the increased shelf life they can reach people in remote areas and last longer.
Advancing processing technology for efficient production
We work with customers to get more out of raw material and reduce food loss during production. With our advanced processing solutions, we help capture unwanted excess food production material and upcycle production waste. For instance, when producing soy milk and tofu, a part of the puréed soybeans remains, which is usually discarded. Together with customers, Tetra Pak has developed a whole bean processing solution that can capture this unwanted material and incorporate it into soy drinks, creating a premium, high-fibre product with no added sugar and excellent flavour.
