The School Milk Programme initiated by Tetra Laval and Tetra Pak Myanmar joins countries around the world to raise awareness and promote the benefits of school milk for children’s health on World School Milk Day.
On the occasion of the 20th World School Milk Day, celebrated on 25th September 2019, Tetra Pak, the world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company, celebrates its six-year School Milk Programme in Myanmar, working in collaboration with the Myanmar government to improve nutrition, school attendance, local production, and build the milk consumption habit for the long-term.
As designated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World School Milk Day is celebrated every year around the world to raise awareness and promote the benefits of school milk for children’s health. This year, Tetra Pak Myanmar, aims to highlight the contribution that its School Milk Programme has made to the health and wellbeing of Myanmar children across the country.
Today, 32,700 children from 320 Myanmar schools located in Yangon, Mandalay, Mon, Kayin, Kayah and Magway are receiving UHT milk in Tetra Brik® Aseptic packages as part of the School Milk Programme. Research conducted by the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) has shown positive physical growth, increasing their weight and body mass index. The initiative has been widely accepted by children and the community. Milk acceptability surveys were conducted on 555 children and 96.6% of the children liked the milk. The programme is also seeing a considerable improvement in enrolment and drop-out rates compared to other schools.
“School Milk Day marks an important occasion to celebrate children’s nutrition around the world. At such a critical growth age, it’s key to provide them with the nutrients that will help them grow strong and healthy. UHT milk products give them the energy to learn at school and contribute to their overall growth and development, while cultivating their habit of consuming this unique source of protein, essential vitamins and minerals more often both at school and at home”, shared Chee Choy Tang, Key Account Director, Tetra Pak Myanmar.
Tetra Pak and Tetra Laval Food for Development have been working with customers, governments, development agencies, NGOs and farmers to support School Milk Programmes around the world since 1962. We support our customers and provide technical assistance to NGOs and governments, so that safe and quality nutrition can be provided to school children in regions with limited access. “School Milk Programmes have played a vital role in improving child nutrition, attendance, enrolment, and helped develop the dairy value chain in many countries around the world.”, explained Rafael Fábrega, Director, Tetra Laval Food for Development. Today, Tetra Pak packages are being used in School Milk and School Feeding Programmes in 59 countries benefiting 66 million children worldwide.
