What’s next for co-packers in spoonable food?

The spoonable food category is moving into new occasions. The Tetra Reva™ carton package  gives co-packers a format that moves with it – and something genuinely different to bring to brands.

Brands are asking for more. Now you can offer it.

Snack occasions are reshaping spoonable food. Products once associated mainly with breakfast are now being chosen across more moments of the day, prompting brand owners to look for formats that are more flexible and giving co-packers a broader set of needs to support.

Alongside product appeal, customers need formats that feel right for the brand and work well in practice. All this makes packaging part of the value that co-packers help bring to market.

Three needs shaping spoonable packaging

Recent Tetra Pak consumer research points to three needs shaping spoonable food packaging today.

Premium yet affordable

Consumers want spoonable products that feel more elevated and appealing, while still fitting everyday budgets.1

A stronger sustainability profile

Consumers are looking for packaging made from renewable materials, that can be recycled, and that feels more aligned with their environmental expectations.1

A less bulky and fragile format

As spoonable food fits more on-the-go routines, consumers want packaging that is easier to carry and store, and more robust in everyday use.1

Meet the Tetra Reva™ carton package

Square where everything else is round. Four flat communication surfaces give brands more to work with on shelf, while the flat top helps keep the package stable from the line through distribution. With tethered and untethered lid options, the Tetra Reva™ package also gives brands more ways to match the opening experience to how their spoonable food is enjoyed.

Flexibility for a wider range of products

The Tetra Reva™ carton package gives you more room to support different customer. The format is designed for both chilled and ambient production in the same filling machine, which increases line utilization and enables flexibility.

The new pack supports a wider variety of spoonable food categories. The full-top opening is suited to bigger bigger particles and thicker textures, making it easier to work with recipes where layered creaminess or consistencies are part of the experience. This opens up possibilities beyond yoghurt too.

Desserts, fresh cheese and plant-based products can all benefit from a format that gives customers something distinctive, while fitting into a production setup designed for flexibility and performance.

Stays strong through day-to-day operations

A new format needs to perform reliably in everyday use, and that starts in operations. The Tetra Reva™ carton package is designed to stay strong through filling, transport and handling, helping the pack hold its shape from distribution to shelf.

This strength also came through in our consumer research2, where visual appeal, robustness and practicality were rated highly. Consumers also responded positively to the fact that the pack is not easily punctured like a foil lid. For co-packers, this translates into smoother handling and fewer issues in distribution.

The format is also designed to reduce the need for secondary packaging. In our internal drop test, the package proved robust, with zero leaks found in the tested batch.3

Ready for new occasions and channels? A different shape only matters if it works in real life.

As spoonable food moves further into on-the-go and snack-led routines, co-packers are increasingly being asked to direct customers into new areas of the category. The Tetra Reva™ carton package helps make that expansion in a practical way. The format is suited to new consumption occasions and channels, including e-commerce, wholesale food service and vending-oriented applications, while also helping customers refresh existing products or bring new launches to market.

That flexibility carries through into production. Our filling machine supports fast SKU changes, making it easier to handle more complex product portfolios with only a simple PM change in the machine infeed.

The packaging material adds further efficiency. Because it is roll-fed, it supports more efficient palletisation, helping simplify handling and storage in the warehouse.

Powered by paper

Sustainability isn't a positioning choice for your brand customers anymore, it's a requirement.
The Tetra Reva™ carton package is paper-based, sourced from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources, with up to 93% renewable content4. This supports customers sustainability expectations and for co-packers, it helps align with PPWR or new packaging requirements as they continue to evolve.

A new format for a broader co-packing offer

Any format a co-packer adds needs to work in two directions: compelling enough that brand customers want it, practical enough that your line can run it. The Tetra Reva™ carton package is built for both.

For brands, it's a pack that looks different on shelf and travels beyond it. For you, it's a format that can follow the category wherever it goes next.
