Others are growing fast

Japan and US are the next biggest markets, making up around 19% and 17% of total global consumption volume. Some other markets to take note of are Thailand and Vietnam, since they have been growing fast - at 13.3% and 8.1% respectively - from 2021 to 2024.

Four starting points for iced tea products

Ready-to-drink iced teas can be categorised into four main types. However, the boundaries between these categories are becoming increasingly blurred as producers innovate to meet consumers’ evolving demands for proactive health, value, novelty, and responsible consumption. Expect to see more inventive formulations featuring added functional ingredients, as well as hybrid products that bridge multiple beverage categories.

Plain teas

Plain teas

Sold either as ready-to-drink or concentrates, plain iced teas are usually made from real, fresh tea leaves, using natural processes to guarantee their freshness and authenticity. They focus on traditional tea types and regional favourites such as oolong, black or green tea. However, this category also includes less well-known varieties like barley and hojicha teas, and scented or herb-flavoured teas like as jasmine, osmanthus, chrysanthemum or chamomile.

milk tea packages

Milk teas

Milk teas

Sold mainly as ready-to-drink, milk iced teas combine the richness of dairy or plant-based milk with the distinctive taste of black or green tea. This pairing softens tea’s natural bitterness, creating a smooth and creamy texture that appeals to a wide range of consumers. Beyond taste, milk adds nutritional value through protein, iron, and calcium, while plant-based alternatives offer lactose-free, vegan options that are growing in popularity worldwide.

Fruit-flavoured teas

Fruit-flavoured teas

Available as ready-to-drink beverages or concentrates, fruit-flavoured teas combine the refreshing qualities of tea with the natural sweetness of fruit juice. Their rich, fruity flavour and functional benefits make them one of the fastest-growing categories in the market. Lemon and peach remain global favourites, while varieties such as mango, passion fruit, and winter melon can all be found on the world’s supermarket shelves.

Cross-category innovations

Cross-category innovations

Cross-category innovations are reshaping the RTD tea landscape. Producers are increasingly breaking traditional boundaries to craft hybrid beverages that combine tea with chocolate, coffee, or even mocktail and cocktail inspirations. Texture-enhancing elements such as fruit pulp, jelly, and tapioca pearls are also being introduced—most commonly in milk teas—to create a more indulgent and multisensory drinking experience.
