Tackling waste challenges throughout the food value chain

Food packaging plays an essential role in feeding people, but when it’s not collected and recycled, it can be a source of waste – and World Bank projects global waste will increase by 70% by 20501. We can help build a circular economy2 by tackling challenges throughout the food value chain, from responsibly sourced renewable raw materials to end-of-life management.

Moving towards a circular economy

Our paper-based carton packages are already recyclable where adequate collection, sorting and recycling infrastructures are in place. In places where collection infrastructure is still being built up, we’re co-investing with recyclers in new equipment and facilities to increase recycling capacity. We collaborate with several stakeholders around the world to create market demand for recycled products – and we design our carton packages to increase the fibre content and use of recycled materials.

Certified recycled polymers

With ten certified production sites worldwide, we use certified recycled polymers3 in selected caps, tops, and coatings, across our portfolio. And we plan to go further by increasing the use of responsibly sourced, renewable content, and recycled polymers in our carton packages.
Tetra Pak machinery to improve the circularity

Tetra Pak certified renovated equipment

We refurbish previously used Tetra Pak machinery to improve the circularity of our equipment, adhering to high-quality standards. From restoring missing parts, to upgrades, and mitigating corrosion. Explore our range of refurbished filling equipment and combinations extending the lifespan of our machinery.

Help reduce litter with tethered caps

Tethered caps can help reduce litter and improve recycling rates. Compared to loose caps, tethered caps stay attached to the package, making them easier to sort and recycle. Since 2019, we've delivered over 3 billion tethered caps, and we continue to innovate with plant-based options made from sugarcane-based polymers and certified recycled polymers.

Contributing to resilient food systems

In a collaborative effort to support the transformation of food systems, we are working across our value chain to increase access to safe food, reduce food loss and waste, and build sustainable food value chains.
