Our renewable portfolio

Currently, we're increasing the renewable content in our products by, for instance, offering paper-based straws and sugarcane-based plastic layers and caps. At the same time we are working to voluntary sustainability standards such as those from the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) and Bonsucro.

Recycle and close the loop

Our ambition is to help put recycled materials to good use – promoting the circularity of our packaging and eliminating unnecessary waste. We are doing so by introducing the use of attributed recycled polymers in our packaging and thereby ensuring at least 10% recycled plastic content in our beverage cartons sold in Europe by 2025.

A little kindness goes a long way

Another way we are working to support the sustainable future of our planet and the long-term success of our customers is by finding ways to create our packaging solutions using fewer resources without compromising our high standards.

Building a circular carton packaging portfolio

In 2018, we started to restructure our packaging portfolio innovation strategy around a vision of the ideal beverage carton: a fully renewable and recyclable package . In 2019, we significantly accelerated our development efforts and increased our investment in order to achieve this vision, focusing on the following four goals/workstreams:

  1. Increase the share of renewable materials, removing layers of fossil-based plastic and/or replacing them with plant-based alternatives.
  2. Use recycled polymers and paper in all our packaging materials, while never compromising food safety.
  3. Develop innovative openings that address litter, such as paper straws, non-detachable alternatives, biodegradable straws and tethered caps. In 2019, we became the firstcarton packaging company to launch paper straws in Europe. We also quintupled our investment in converting all plastic straws to paper in the longer term.
  4. Enhance recycling through packaging design.
