Roughly one third of the food produced never finds its way into our stomachs. Either it perishes or is thrown into the dustbin.

Discarded food t is a huge waste of nature’s limited resources. The food losses are of different kinds and occur at every stage of the food chain, from cultivation, production, processing and distribution to retailing and consumption. Poor countries are affected worst by losses in the early stages, due to climate-related causes, but more often due to a lack of agricultural technology, storage facilities, packaging and infrastructure. In medium and high income countries a large amount of food loss occurs at the final stages and a high proportion after the food has been bought by the consumer.
