Addressing the root causes of nature loss requires action beyond our immediate value chain. As part of the Transform pillar of our Approach to Nature, we are expanding our efforts beyond our operations and value chain through actions such as helping to protect and restore landscapes affected by wider industry pressures.
In 2022, we launched Conservador das Araucárias (Araucaria Conservation Project), our flagship land restoration project in partnership with Apremavi. The project demonstrates this commitment in practice, supporting landscape restoration and nature conservation through on-the-ground action.
The world's forests play a vital role in supporting biodiversity, regulating water cycles and storing carbon, yet they continue to disappear at an alarming rate. This results in habitat loss for countless plant and animal species, while also reducing the ability of ecosystems to absorb carbon, regulate water flows and maintain healthy soils.
Land restoration can help reverse some of these impacts by restoring degraded landscapes, rebuilding soil health and re-establishing native vegetation. In turn, this supports biodiversity, strengthens ecosystem resilience and contributes to climate stability.
The Araucaria Conservation Project was established in partnership with Apremavi, a Brazilian civil society organisation that has worked on conservation and restoration projects since 1987.
It aims to restore a portion of the Araucaria moist forest within Brazil's Atlantic Forest biome. This is one of the world's richest biomes, home to thousands of plant and animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
As a biodiversity hotspot1, it is also one of the most endangered, with only a small fraction of its original area preserved. Brazil is not only a priority region for ecosystem restoration, but also an important sourcing hub for Tetra Pak, providing renewable raw materials used in our beverage cartons.
