Walking the talk with our 70 recycling experts

Cross-industry collaboration is at the heart of strengthening and scaling recycling systems globally. Our dedicated team of 70 recycling experts are stationed at locations around the world to help establish and improve local recycling infrastructure. Every day they collaborate with recyclers, local authorities and customers to advise local authorities on collection and sorting schemes, and to co-invest with industrial partners in new recycling capacities.

On the horizon: a fibre-based barrier

About 40% of consumers say they would be more motivated to sort for recycling if packages were made entirely from paperboard and had no plastic or aluminium. Over the next 5-10 years, we’re investing up to €100 million to further enhance the environmental profile of cartons, including the development of packages made with increased fibre-based renewable content. This is a key part of our long-term roadmap to deliver the world’s most sustainable food package1.

Decarbonising our packaging portfolio

Since the launch in 2015 of Tetra Rex®, the world’s first fully renewable paper-based carton package, we have steadily increased the use of plant-based polymers in our packages. In 2021, we sold 17.6 billion packages and 10.8 billion caps made with plant-based plastic, resulting in 96 kilo tonnes of CO2 saved compared to the CO2 that would have been emitted using fossil-based plastic2.

Decarbonising our own operations

Leading the sustainability transformation means leading by example, and we want our own operations to be a global benchmark. Between 2010 and 2020, we decoupled growth from our emissions, reducing our operational carbon footprint by 70% over ten years. Using and investing in renewable energy is an important focus point. We’ve doubled our solar capacity worldwide. Today, we source 100% renewable electricity for all our production sites in the EU and 80% worldwide. We aim to source 100% renewable electricity for all our sites worldwide by 2030, through a commitment to RE100, an initiative bringing together large and ambitious businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity.

Aseptic solutions help build resilient food systems

The global population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, requiring up to 60% more food3. Our aseptic processing and packaging technology extends the shelf life of food and makes it possible to transport essential food products even to the most remote geographies, contributing to more resilient food systems and helping fight food insecurity around the world. We are driving innovation to further reduce the environmental footprint of our aseptic paper-based carton packages and equipment, while collaborating with partners to reduce food loss and waste and build sustainable value chains.

Increasing access to safe food

Working with customers, governments, partners and NGOs, we offer practical support in developing, implementing and evaluating School Feeding Programmes that improve health and access to nutritious beverages for children worldwide. In 2021, 61 million school children in 41 countries received milk or other nutritious beverages in Tetra Pak paper-based carton packages.

Enabling dairy production for smallholder farmers

In order to secure a long-term supply of locally produced quality milk and minimise food loss, we collaborate with our customers and different organisations to support local small-holder farmers with our Dairy Hub Model. Since 2011, we have supported 16 Dairy hub projects around the world reaching 54.000 farmers that deliver milk to our customers.

Minimising harm to ecosystems through responsible sourcing

As part of protecting biodiversity, we work with third-party certification standards, which helps ensure our plant-based materials come from certified and controlled sources. Today, all of the paperboard in our packages comes from FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council™, The FSC license code for Tetra Pak is FSC™ C014047) certified forests and other controlled sources, and all plant-based polymers used in our packaging materials and closures are Bonsucro certified (www.bonsucro.com). And we are conducting supply chain intelligence projects to give us an external, impartial review of the certification and standards we use to ensure sustainable sourcing.

Recognised by CDP for four years running

We have been recognised for leadership in corporate transparency and performance on climate change and forests by global non-profit CDP, securing a place on the prestigious ‘A List’ for the fourth year running. Out of nearly 15,000 companies that were scored based on data submitted through CDP’s 2022 Climate Change and Forest questionnaires, we were one of a handful to receive the doube ‘A’.
