Tetra Pak launches Cartons for Communities in Indonesia to strengthen food and beverage carton collection and recycling

Jakarta, Indonesia (12 June 2026): Tetra Pak today announced the launch of Cartons for Communities in Indonesia, a collaborative platform that aims to strengthen the collection and recycling of food and beverage cartons. Bringing together collectors, recyclers, industry players, schools, government stakeholders, communities, and consumers, the initiative is designed to help expand collection efforts and support Indonesia’s transition towards a circular economy.

The initiative is in line with Indonesia’s broader sustainability agenda, including the National Circular Economy Roadmap and National Action Plan 2025–20451, as well as ongoing efforts to strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) implementation. By supporting the collection and recycling of food and beverage cartons, Cartons for Communities aims to help strengthen material recovery efforts and improve access to recycling networks across Indonesia.

As one of Tetra Pak’s sustainability initiatives in Indonesia, Cartons for Communities connects stakeholders across the recycling value chain and helps improve access to collection networks. Through the platform, stakeholders can:

  • Join a growing network of organisations supporting food and beverage carton collection and recycling
  • Connect with collection, aggregation, and recycling partners
  • Access resources and information to support recycling participation and awareness activities
  • Identify opportunities to contribute to collection and recovery efforts in their communities
  • Find nearby carton drop-off and collection points
  • Learn how to empty, flatten, and sort cartons correctly for recycling

The platform builds on Tetra Pak’s long-standing collaboration, since 2005, with recycling partners, waste collectors, industry players, schools, and other stakeholders to strengthen the carton recycling ecosystem in Indonesia. Over the years, these efforts have focused on enhancing consumer awareness, supporting sorting and collection of infrastructure and networks, expanding recycling solutions and capacity, and fostering market development for recycled end products.

In 2025 alone, approximately 4,847 tonnes of beverage cartons were collected and recycled in Indonesia and transformed into products such as paper, boards, and logistic pallets. These efforts were supported by a network of collection and recycling partners, including 57 collection hubs operating across urban areas in Java and Bali. Through Cartons for Communities, and with the support of communities and partners, Tetra Pak aims to expand access to collection points and make food and beverage carton recycling more convenient.

Fatma Nur Rosana, Sustainability Manager at Tetra Pak Indonesia, said, “Advancing circularity can be achieved through active collaboration across the recycling value chain. Through Cartons for Communities, we are bringing together partners across the value chain, from waste banks and recyclers to industry players, schools, communities, government stakeholders, and consumers, to support collection and recycling efforts. By connecting existing initiatives and encouraging broader participation, we hope to help strengthen a more sustainable recycling ecosystem in Indonesia.”

Cartons for Communities programme partnerships

The Cartons for Communities programme works with stakeholders across the value chain to support awareness and collection activities across Indonesia. The programme focuses on four key partner groups:

  • Waste banks & Tempat Pengelolaan Sampah 3R - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (TPS3R)
Waste Banks and TPS3R act as local collection and aggregation hubs, receiving, sorting, and consolidating food and beverage cartons from households and communities. They help ensure proper handling of materials and connect collected cartons to downstream recyclers, supporting more efficient flow into the recycling system.
  • Informal sector
Independent collectors are supported through training and connection to recycling networks, helping improve collection coverage while supporting livelihoods. This strengthens overall material recovery and keeps more cartons within the recycling loop.
  • HORECA
Hotels, restaurants, and cafés (HORECA) support volume recovery by implementing on-site segregation and storage practices. Through staff engagement and operational routines, cartons are separated at source and prepared for collection, helping integrate recycling into daily business operations.
  • Schools
Schools promote recycling habits through student and teacher engagement, awareness campaigns, and internal collection systems. These efforts not only support carton recovery but also build long-term environmental awareness that extends to families and surrounding communities.

The programme also brings together existing partners including YAPSI, ecoBali, Waste4Change,Armada Kemasan Nusantara (AKN), iLitterless, and PastiKlola.

Nugraha Wijayanto from TPS3R Mulyoagung Bersatu, Malang, shared
“Through our collaboration with YAPSI, we have been able to engage communities, businesses, universities, and MBG kitchens in collecting beverage cartons. Beyond increasing collection, the programme has also helped raise awareness of recycling and encouraged more people to participate in responsible waste management within the community.”

Suratmin from TPS3R Turus Maju Gurah, Kediri, said
“Our partnership with YAPSI has helped strengthen our collection activities through training, equipment support, and additional income for TPS3R operations. With this support, we are expanding our collection network to reach more households, schools, and community partners, helping divert more beverage cartons from disposal and into recycling.”

From the private sector, FINNS Beach Club, Bali, shared its sustainability perspective:
“As part of our sustainability commitment, we continuously improve waste management through better and more responsible sorting practices, including the dedicated separation of beverage cartons for proper recycling. We believe sustainability is built through consistent daily actions, and through strong internal commitment and partnerships, we aim to create a positive impact and inspire the hospitality industry in Bali to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable environment.”

Tetra Pak invites industry players, retailers, HORECA operators, schools, communities, waste management organisations, and other stakeholders to join the platform and help strengthen food and beverage carton collection and recycling efforts in Indonesia. Organisations interested in contributing can connect with Cartons for Communities and explore partnership opportunities through the platform.

Fatma added, “Building a circular economy requires shared responsibility and long-term collaboration. We invite more organisations, industry players, schools, communities, and individuals to join Cartons for Communities and play an active role in strengthening food and beverage carton collection and recycling efforts across Indonesia.”
