We’re working hard to improve the recycling value chain wherever our cartons have a presence. As part of the EU plastics pledge, we’ve committed to working with industry partners to ensure that by 2030, recycling solutions are in place for every beverage carton component across Europe. In partnership with paper mills and plastics recyclers, we are working to enable all components of used beverage cartons to be recycled. As an industry, we have the ambition to achieve a 90% collection rate and a 70% effective recycling rate in the European Union by 2030. In 2021, 1.2 million tonnes of cartons were collected and sent to recyclers.

Using recycled materials means less demand for finite resources and less litter ending up in landfills and the environment. And it contributes to a circular economy.

What are certified recycled polymers?
An advanced chemical recycling process allows us to address some issues surrounding the end-of-life disposal of plastics. But what are certified recycled polymers, how are they produced, and what are the benefits for food producers and consumers alike? Download our infographic to find out.
Verified circularity
The certified recycled polymers used in the caps, tops and/or coatings of our carton packages are produced under the RSB or ISCC chain of custody attribution methods . This means that the plastics are made of a mix of recycled and non-recycled materials, but that the corresponding mass of recycled materials has been tracked throughout the Tetra Pak supply chain – a process that is verified by a third-party auditor.
In August 2020, we became the first company in the food and beverage packaging industry to be awarded the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Advanced Products certification. This represents yet another milestone in our journey towards the world’s most sustainable food package: where the sourcing and use of recycled polymers is recognised and approved by trusted certifications.

Taking carton packages with recycled content to the next level
Tetra Pak has made new advancements in the area of recycled content, expanding its offering of packaging solutions using certified recycled polymers to cover new formats, product categories and geographies.
Post-consumer recycling
Recycling is an important part of circularity, and we aim to continuously increase collection, sorting and recycling of all carton packages. We are investing up to €100 million over the next 5-10 years in packaging material innovation to further enhance the environmental performance of our packaging portfolio, and partnering with recyclers to increase recycling capacity and strengthen recycling infrastructure for cartons.
