Taking an integrated view on sustainability

The sustainability challenges we face on our planet are all interconnected and, together, contribute to climate change. Therefore, we need to understand the complexity of the challenges and not try to solve one problem while creating another.

We’re committed to making food safe and available everywhere, and we promise to protect what’s good – protecting our food, people and planet. By adopting an integrated approach to sustainability, we can use our expertise, technology, and partnerships to move the world’s food systems1 forward.

Our focus areas

Food Systems

Food systems are at the heart of our sustainability agenda. A transformation of how food is sourced, grown, processed and packaged is essential to sustainably feed a growing global population and improve health, education and economic outcomes, while reducing the associated environmental impact at every step.

Circularity

Beyond its primary purpose of protecting food, packaging, when recycled, also plays a valuable part in keeping materials in use for as long as possible. We can also lower the carbon footprint of packaging by sourcing renewable input materials with lower carbon footprints compared to fossil-fuel based materials.

Climate

Global food systems account for around 30% of global GHG emissions2 and are key to tackling the climate crisis. To avoid widespread adverse impacts and damages to nature and people, we must keep warming to not more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This requires deep, rapid and sustained GHG emissions reductions in all sectors.

Nature

Global food systems and our value chain are heavily reliant on the services provided by nature. Many of these essential services are now at risk, with potentially significant negative impacts on human wellbeing.

Social Sustainability

We strive to improve the livelihoods of people across the world by giving access to safe food; contributing to economic growth; and respecting human rights in our workplaces, our value chain, and the communities we operate in.
