Our supply chain accounts for approximately 38 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in our value chain. We work closely with supplier partners to identify efficiencies, both in their operations and through their own supply chains.
We evaluate supplier performance formally annually and we use online sustainability management software that is designed to aggregate, diagnose, monitor and report data, while our supplier assessment system includes climate performance. To score highly, a supplier must:
In 2016, we saw a 21 percent improvement in climate efficiency among our packaging material suppliers compared to 2010.
Over 80 percent of the carbon impact from upstream in our supply chain comes from packaging materials production and transportation.
Our chain of custody goals within our FSC commitments make a direct contribution to protecting forests, while sourcing bio-based alternatives to plastic help reduce the carbon impact in our supply chain.
In partnership with Maersk Line for sustainable freight
When transporting our goods, we consolidate shipments and use rail rather than air where possible. We’re part of the Clean Shipping Network and are working alongside one of our largest suppliers, Maersk Line, to jointly commit to a carbon pact to reduce CO2 emissions per container by 45 percent by 2020 (2010 baseline).
